Days of the Week in Hebrew and English

Rafi recognizes the days of the week in English but for the life of him can’t put them in order. I’ll say, “On Thursday…” and he’ll ask, “Is that yom shlishi [Tuesday/third day]?” It took me a while to figure out that he wasn’t guessing blindly; he was making the same mistakes consistently. So I asked why, and he explained it to me as follows:

Sunday sounds like “sheni” (Apparently sh and s are equivalent, and they both have an n in the middle.)

Tuesday sounds like “two’s day.”

Thursday sounds “third day.”

I never noticed before, but it’s confusing, if you think about it!
